Children, ages 5 and 6, dead after wreck with semi – WSB Atlanta

Police are investigating a wreck that killed two children and injured a mother.

The crash happened on Highway 138 between Caribou Trail and Scott Road in Clayton County just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“I heard this big boom. It sounded like an explosion,” one neighbor told Channel 2’s Carl Willis, asking not to be identified.

Witnesses said seeing the aftermath of the fatal collision was much worse than they could imagine.

Police say a silver Honda was T-boned by a semi-truck. The impact killed Jaaron Hamrick 5-year-old and Jayona Hamrick 6-year-old.

The neighbor says she spoke with the children’s mother moments after the crash.

“She said the brakes went out on the vehicle,” the neighbor told Willis. “It was chaotic. She was screaming. Praying to God. Asking God to take her instead.”

Police said the driver had a stop sign, but her car pulled out onto Highway 138 right into the path of a big rig without a trailer.

“He said he stood up and tried to stop,” said Joy Grady, the sister of the truck driver.

Grady identified her brother as Cecil Adams, 44. She said he had no time to stop.

“He went back to try to get the kids out of the car and said the little boy looked at him and then took his last breath,” Grady said.

Grady said her brother is a father himself and keeps replaying the moment over in his head.

“My brother is devastated. He loves kids… and that’s devastating him,” Grady said.

“It was just very tragic. It was very sad. And I just hope and pray that the people of Atlanta pray for this family,” the neighbor said.

Witnesses said the mother was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries. There is no word on her condition at this point.
