Community Members Rally to Expand Childcare in Monroe County – TWC News

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Dozens of local protesters are nurturing an effort to expand childcare in Monroe County.

Members of The Rochester Alliance of Communities Transforming Society gathered at the County Office building on West Main Street to push for the cause.

They want the county to double the number of children in the childcare assistance program, expand early education and childcare, and pay childcare providers on time.

“There are families who need the service and they are denied because there is less funding,” Mario Escalante of the Rochester Alliance. “What we are saying is, there are about seven thousand children today that need daycare services. Why can we not provide those services to them?”

They held up a chain of postcards that represent ones sent to county leaders during the campaign.

“This rally is an incredible statement to our community that we have to support our children,” said County Executive candidate Sandy Frankel. “Children do best in school, graduate from high school, go on to college or a career if they have quality childcare early education and there’s nothing more important than preparing our children for a strong and prosperous future.”

In all, organizers say more than 3,000 postcards were sent, along with hundreds of emails.
