SPENCER TOWNSHIP, MI — Two children were flown by Aero Med helicopter to a hospital with hypothermia after walkers found them next to their deceased mother in a remote area of northern Kent County.
Police say they suspect the mother took her own life, but are looking at all possibilities. She had suffered a gunshot wound and police found a gun at the scene.
Police believe the children, both under 6, had been outside all night along a trail next to Riverview Drive, near Lincoln Lake Road in Spencer Township.
Kent County sheriff’s Capt. Kevin Kelley said some people out walking their dog about 10:30 a.m. found the scene and the two children.
Both children were alert, but were cold. Some blood was on at least one of the children.
Kelley said he had heard the children are ages 3 and 5, but could not confirm the ages. The mother is believed to be in her 20s.
“I think mom was on the ground and the kids were on top of her,” he said, describing the scene found by the walkers.
A vehicle, believed to be the woman’s car, was close by.
“It’s horrible,” Kelley said.
“We’re trying to figure out why she came out here,” he said. “We’re still really trying to piece it all together.”
He said the children were clothed, but did not know what type of clothing or whether they had coats.
