Deputies investigating after teen injured at fair – Live 5 News

A 16-year-old was injured at the Coastal Carolina Fair Sunday night and Charleston County deputies are trying to figure out how it happened.

The teen, whose identity was not released by deputies, reported a puncture wound to deputies and EMTs at approximately 7:20 p.m. according to an incident report.

The mother of the teenager, said he had gone to the fair with two of his friends after going to church.

The teen told deputies he sat down near a ride for a moment and when he stood up he felt something wet on his left side. He said he reached back and when he brought his hand back there was blood on it, the report states.

“He noticed that something didn’t feel right,” the mom said. “He said the music was really loud and then he felt something wet.”

The teen did not know how he was injured and did not report any altercations or suspicious activities, Charleston County Sheriff’s Lt. Rita Zelinsky said.

He was treated at the EMS office then transported to Trident for further treatment.

“The doctor told us he got really lucky,” the mother said. “He’s taking it like a champ.”

According to the mother, the Pinewood Prep student didn’t go to school Monday.

“He’s still really sore,” she added. “There’s still some bleeding. The cut had to have been three to four inches deep.”

Joe Bolchoz said Monday he was aware of a fair goer feeling pain in his back, but wasn’t aware of any “punctured wounds.”

The mother of the teenager said they go to the fair every year.

“I’m not telling people to not go to the fair, we love the fair,” she said. “You just have to be aware of your surroundings.”

Deputies say there is no evidence to suggest the victim was assaulted but the investigation is ongoing.
