Living (and campaigning) in our current superhero-dominated pop culture landscape, presidential candidates might want to pick up a comic book. Or two.

Jeb Bush learned this lesson the hard way when he was asked to name his favorite Marvel superhero at an event in Las Vegas Wednesday night. Seems like an easy question, right? Not for Bush, who gave one non-answer, one wrong answer and one kind of cringeworthy answer.

First, he straight up didn’t answer the question at hand. He said (via CNN):

“I like watching the movies. I wish I owned Marvel, as someone that believes in capitalism.”

Hey, we like watching the movies, too! Also, owning Marvel would be swell! But neither of those things are a superhero that he personally thinks is cool. So he tried again, this time naming an actual superhero. Although clearly, he has no idea which heroes are Marvel and which are DC, since he picked the most famous superhero that’s not from Marvel:

“I don’t know, I’m kinda old school. I like the old school guys like Batman, a little dark these days.”

Nope, not a Marvel hero. If Marvel owned the rights to Batman they might actually rule the known universe instead of almost ruling it. So at this point we still do not know his favorite Marvel hero.

Bush tries to answer one more time, and we found ourselves wishing he’d stuck with Batman. After noting that he’s seen an ad for CBS’ upcoming Supergirl show (yet another DC superhero, by the way), he said:

“I saw it when I was working out this morning. She looked kinda … she looked pretty hot. I don’t know which channel it’s on, but I’m looking forward to that.”

To his credit, Bush seemed to realize that he had said something a little … shall we say “off.” After he made a judgment about the physical appearance of an actress much younger than himself, he added:

“That’ll make news.”

Well, he got one thing right.
