Today is all about the sci-fi.
(The first person who says, “Star Wars isn’t sci-fi, it’s fantasy,” gets a wedgie.)
The Humble Star Wars Audiobook Bundle is a collection of at least seven audiobooks, including three immensely popular radio dramas. (I say “at least” seven because the bundle promises “more audiobooks coming soon.”) Many of them star familiar faces — er, voices — including Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy-Dee Williams.
If you’re not familiar with Humble Bundles, they work like this: Pay at least $1 and you’ll get two titles: “Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama” and “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi” (the latter based on a comic-book series). Those two alone would cost you over $35 if purchased separately.
Pay more than the average purchase price (currently $13.17) and you’ll get three additional titles (plus the mysterious “more audiobooks,” whatever they turn out to be). But at that point you might as well pony up $15, which gets you everything — including “Star Wars: Dark Forces Collector’s Trilogy,” audiobooks based on the popular game series.
Whatever you pay, a portion of the proceeds goes to charities First Book and Unicef.
All the books are provided in MP3 format, meaning they’re DRM-free and will play on just about any device you own. (Well, not your turntable.) The combined value of the bundle is well over $200, so this is a seriously good deal for any Star Wars fan.
I know the movie version starring Matt Damon is coming soon, but I highly recommend reading the book first (or instead — I rarely enjoy the movie if I already know the story). This is a thoroughly original, absolutely riveting tale, and well told.
