Principal photography for Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII begins in January, and according to Kathleen Kennedy: “We’re excited to get back together. We start shooting Episode VIII in January, we’ve been prepping the movie for the last year and (writer-and-director) Rian Johnson has been doing an amazing job,” she said. So we’ll probably find out a lot more about the cast and story then.

Here’s everything else we know…

Star Wars Episode VIII Release Date

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released on May 26th, 2017. We have the complete schedule of upcoming Star Wars movies right here.

Star Wars Episode VIII Director

Rian Johnson is directing Star Wars: Episode VIII. It’s always a good time to remind everyone that he confirmed that news via his Twitter account in the best possible way, with a clip from, of all movies, The Right Stuff. Nice touch.

Looper was an exceptional piece of science fiction, and Johnson certainly fits the mold of some of the other smart young directors that Disney has tapped for Star Wars films, like Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World).

Star Wars Episode VIII Filming

Production began in September in Ireland. Initial reports suggested that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was headed to Skellig Michael for reshoots since J.J. Abrams had done filming for the movie there earlier, but Lucasfilm confirmed that director Rian Johnson (Looper) did filming there for Episode VIII.

According to The Irish Examiner, “A crew of around 100 people and cast members, including Mark Hamill who will reprise his Luke Skywalker role, are expected to be on the boats due to leave Portmagee today at 7 am.”

Shooting began in earnest in January 2016 at Pinewood Studios, where it was revealed parts of Skellig Michael had been reproduced for the shoot.

In other news, J.J. Abrams’ buddy Greg Grunberg, who plays Resistance pilot Snap Wexley in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, told Washington Post that Abrams is starting to regret not directing Episode VIII, especially after reading writer-director Rian Johnson’s script for the upcoming installment.

Grunberg said, “[Abrams] read it and said something he never, ever says. He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.'” Heck of an endorsement for Johnson’s script, eh?
